Jamie Sorenson
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Jamie Sorenson hails from San Diego, CA. She enlisted in the Navy in July 1995 and commissioned through the Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program.
She spent her first year of nursing as an Oncology Nurse and second year as a Post-Surgical Nurse. She then deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GTMO) to provide treatment for detainees. Upon returning to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth she requested to work in Inpatient Mental Health wards, where she worked on the detoxification unit, the acutely mentally ill unit and served as the Assistant Division Officer.
She began graduate school at the University of Virginia (UVA) in August 2008. Her primary area of focus was Forensic Psychiatry. While attending UVA, she volunteered at the Virginia Sexual Assault Resource Agency as a resource agent for individuals who had been sexually assaulted.
After graduate school she reported to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Department of Mental Health (DMH) in 2010. She was utilized in multiple roles including: DMH Training Officer, Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (PMHCNS) for the Inpatient Mental Health Unit, and as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). As a PMHNP she worked at the following areas: Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) Residential Treatment Center, the Overcoming Adversity Stress Injury Support (OASIS) PTSD Residential Treatment Center, and at the Naval Station Mental Health Clinic. She was selected to be the first PMHNP to deploy in lieu of a Psychiatrist on a Navy vessel for the 2012 Pacific Partnership deployment.
In August 2013 she reported to United States Naval Hospital, Okinawa, Japan, where she worked multiple roles to include: DMH Associate Director, Senior Nurse, Outpatient Mental Health and SARP PMHNP, and provided hospitalist coverage for Inpatient Mental Health and Emergency Department.
In July 2015 she volunteered to deploy again and served as the sole medical provider at the Warrior Transition Program in Sembach, Germany. There she provided mental health treatment to Sailors returning from combat and operational deployments, conducts combat operational stress workshops, escorts Returning Sailors on reintegration trips and performed post deployment health assessments.
She was hand selected to be the first embedded Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to provide care and implement positive psychology programs to the submarine sailors attached to Commander, Submarine Squadron Eleven from 2016-2019.
Well aware of the incredible shortage of mental health providers and the difficulties patients have to get an appointment, Jamie decided to start her own practice after retiring from the military. Jamie named her practice Jamie M Sorenson Psych Nurse Practitioner in which she delivers her services directly to businesses, medical clinics, mental health clinics and provides telemedicine.
Jamie has earned the following degrees: Bachelors of Arts and Science in Psychology and Nursing from San Diego State University, Master Certification in Health Psychology from Independence University California College of Health Sciences, Masters and Post Masters of Science in Nursing from the UVA. She also has the following licenses and certifications: Adult PMHNPBC/PMHCNS-BC, California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License, and Registered Nurse.
Jamie has published two self-help fictional novels.

She also was selected by her civilian counterparts as the Psychiatric Advanced Practice Mental Health Nurse of the Year in 2013 by San Diego Psychiatric Nursing Society. Jamie has completed over 80 whole/half marathons, is an avid traveler and animal lover.
